What a fence costs in materials
At the reference prices on the page, a 6 foot wood privacy fence round three sides of a back yard — 50, 100 and 50 feet — comes to $3,039.58 in materials, about $15 a foot. Every price is a box beside the row it prices: type your lumber yard's and the total follows. Labor, permits and hauling the dirt away are not on the list.
| Row | Bought | At | Comes to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×4 posts | 28 × 10 ft | $1.69 a foot | $473.20 |
| 1×6 pickets | 461 × 6 ft | $0.38 a foot | $1,051.08 |
| 2×4 rails | 81 × 8 ft | $0.60 a foot | $388.80 |
| Screws | 8 boxes of 2 in, 2 of 3 in | $288.70 | |
| Fast-setting concrete | 94 × 50 lb | $7.98 | $750.12 |
| Gravel | 16 × 50 lb | $5.48 | $87.68 |
Where the money goes
The pickets are a third of it, and the concrete a quarter. Fast-setting mix is sold for setting posts — pour it dry, add water, and it sets in 20 to 40 minutes — but ordinary concrete mix in 80 pound bags does the same job for less: 59 bags at $5.68 instead of 94 at $7.98, and the fence comes to $2,624.58. Choose Concrete mix under Assumptions to see it. Cedar pickets run about twice the price of pressure-treated pine; type the price of the ones you are buying.
Lumber is priced by the foot because a yard prices a 10 foot post more than an 8: the list multiplies each board by its length, so a 6×6 gate post or a longer picket is priced right without a box for every length.
What is not counted
Post caps start unticked; at $7.98 each they would add $223.44. Stain, a post-hole auger rental, and the delivery are not on the list.
