Deck Screw Calculator

Two at every crossing, counted from the joists you actually have.

A material estimate from a prescriptive guide, not a design. Fasteners have to be corrosion resistant, and a licensed contractor or engineer, and your local building department, decide what is built.

10% covers decking cut to length and culled, the figure Decks.com adds for a straight lay (15% for a diagonal one). It is added once, to the deck boards — the joists, beam, posts and footings are counted off the frame and read off the DCA 6 tables.

What to buy

Buying noteThe concrete is the footing pads only. A pier or a tube form from the pad up to the ground is extra, and so is anything the frost line adds below it.
Buying noteDCA 6 gives a maximum spacing for guard posts on a stair, not for ones on the deck surface. The 6 ft used here is that stair figure; your building department decides.

Assumption Value Confidence
R507.7 decking, square layIRC R507.7, maximum joist spacing for wood decking. A single span is decking bearing on two joists; continuous is three or more. DCA 6 requires every segment of decking to bear on at least three supports, so the continuous column is the one this page reads. IRC 2021 and IRC 2024, R507.7 From a data sheet or an agency document
DCA 6 T2 joist span, Southern PineDCA 6-15 Table 2, allowable span L_J: how far a joist of this size may span at this spacing, face of support to face of support. Assumes 40 psf live load, 10 psf dead load, No. 2 grade, wet service and L/360 deflection. Species: Southern Pine. DCA 6-15 From a data sheet or an agency document
DCA 6 T2 overhang, Southern PineDCA 6-15 Table 2, allowable overhang L_O: how far a joist of this size may pass the beam. The overhang used is the lesser of this and a quarter of the actual span. The column does not always fall as the spacing widens - the guide shades those cells as deflection controlled - and the figures are carried as printed. DCA 6-15 From a data sheet or an agency document
DCA 6 T3A beam, 2-ply, Southern PineDCA 6-15 Table 3A, beam span L_B: how far a beam of this make-up may span between posts, by the span of the joists it carries. The column is read as "joist spans less than or equal to", so a joist span is rounded up to the next column before the table is read. Assumes 40 psf live, 10 psf dead, No. 2 grade and wet service. DCA 6 T4 footing diameterDCA 6-15 Table 4. Assumes 1,500 psf soil bearing and 150 pcf concrete; the guide allows the value to be multiplied by 0.9 for a corner post, which this page does not do. Both axes are read as "less than or equal to", so a span is rounded up to the next column before the table is read. The diameter of a round footing under one post. DCA 6 T4 footing thicknessDCA 6-15 Table 4. Assumes 1,500 psf soil bearing and 150 pcf concrete; the guide allows the value to be multiplied by 0.9 for a corner post, which this page does not do. Both axes are read as "less than or equal to", so a span is rounded up to the next column before the table is read. The thickness of the footing pad. Assumes 2,500 psi concrete. Deck board widthThe width a nominal 6 in deck board really is: 5 1/2 in. Trex publishes its boards as 0.94 in x 5.5 in, and PS 20 dresses a nominal 6 in face to 5 1/2 in, so wood and composite are the same width. Deck screws: two a board at every joist

A 16 by 12 foot deck at 16 inches on center is 26 rows of decking over 13 joists. Each board gets two fasteners where it crosses each joist, so that is 26 × 13 × 2 = 676 screws — three 5 pound boxes of #9 × 3 inch at 309 a box. DCA 6-15 asks for 2-8d threaded nails or 2-#8 screws at every joist, and for the boards to sit about ⅛ inch apart.

Switch to hidden fasteners and it is one clip per crossing instead: 26 × 13 = 338 clips, four 90-clip buckets. A bucket covers about 50 square feet, so 192 square feet checks out at four either way.

Why a count per square foot is not enough

Omni uses a flat 3.5 screws a square foot. On this deck that gives 3.5 × 192 = 672, which looks right — but only because the joists happen to be 16 inches apart. Bring them to 12 inches, as a composite board laid at 45° requires, and the crossings go up by a third while the flat figure does not move: 676 becomes 884 and the fixed rate is 212 screws short. The count has to follow the spacing, and here it does.

Inch Calculator does vary its clip count with the spacing — 1.75 a square foot at 16 inches, 2 at 12, 1 at 24 — and takes screws as twice the clips, which lands close. Counting the crossings directly gets there without the rates.

The screws that are not decking screws

The list below keeps the structural fasteners apart from the decking ones, because they are not interchangeable. The ledger takes ½ inch lag screws or bolts with washers at the spacing DCA 6 Table 5 gives for the joist span — lead anchors are prohibited, and the tip of a lag has to pass right through the inside face of the house band joist. Joists hang on rated hangers at the ledger and take a hurricane tie at the beam, each good for at least 100 pounds in uplift and in lateral load. Hangers, ties, clips and their nails all have to be galvanised or stainless, and aluminum should not touch copper-bearing treated lumber.
