Square Feet to Cubic Yards

An area you know and a depth — the cubic yards it takes.

Weights are estimates by material; your supplier's figures win.

Area 1

33.333 ft³

Nothing is added unless you add it. CalculatorSoup's table: mulch 5–10%, gravel paths 10–15%, concrete 5%.

Assumption Value Confidence
Pickup bed, loaded levelA full-size pickup's bed to the top of its sides, as the makers measure it: Ram 1500's 6 ft 4 in box 61.3 ft³ (2.27 yd³), Ford F-150's 6.5 ft box 62.3 ft³ (2.31); the smaller of the two is kept. A short box holds less, about 53 ft³ (under 2 yd³): measure your own. yd³ From a data sheet or an agency document

Square feet to cubic yards

Multiply the square feet by the depth in inches and divide by 324. An area of 100 square feet filled 4 inches deep is 100 × 4 ÷ 324 = 1.23 cubic yards, which is 33.33 cubic feet. A supplier sells it in steps, so the page rounds the order up to the next quarter yard: 1.25 yd³.

The 324 is a cubic yard written in square feet and inches: 27 cubic feet, and 12 inches to the foot, 27 × 12 = 324. It is the same sum as length × width × depth ÷ 27, with the depth left in the inches you measured it in, so nothing has to be turned into a fraction of a foot first.

What one cubic yard covers

Turned round, the 324 answers the other question: how far a yard you already have will go. Divide 324 by the depth in inches.

One calculator's quick table is the 4 inch row: a patch 9 feet by 9 feet, 81 square feet, takes one yard at 4 inches deep. When every area on the page lies at one depth, the page prints that row for your depth and what the whole job covers — 100 square feet for the example above, back where it started.

An area you know, or one to measure

The area box takes the number from a plan, a listing or a lawn survey, with thousands commas if you like: 2,400 is read as 2,400 square feet. If you would rather measure, switch the part to a rectangle and type the sides the way a tape reads them — 10 6 is 10 feet 6 inches. Add a part for each patch, and set one to subtract to take a patio out of a lawn.

The depth box reads inches: 4 is 4 inches and 1' is a foot. A depth over 24 inches is questioned, because that is more often a measurement typed in feet than a fill anyone spreads.

From yards to an order

Pick a material and the page weighs the yards at its loose figure, in short tons of 2,000 lb and tonnes of 1,000 kg, and counts the pickup loads by the bed and by the payload. Type your supplier's price per yard and delivery fee beside the order to see what it comes to. For bags rather than a delivered load, the links under the answer carry this area to the gravel, mulch and concrete pages, which sell by the bag.
