How much sand goes under pavers
An inch, screeded loose over the area the pavers cover. Under the 12 by 20 foot patio this page opens with that is 240 square feet by 1 inch: 0.74 cubic yards, 20 cubic feet, 40 bags of 0.5 cubic feet. The pavers are laid on it and then compacted into it, so the sand is bought as a loose inch, with no allowance for compaction and no waste — the bed is the size of the patio however the pavers are cut.
Which sand
Concrete sand, coarse and washed, to ASTM C33 — the bags sold as paver or leveling sand. CMHA, the industry's technical body, is plain that masonry sand, limestone screenings and stone dust do not belong under pavers: they hold water and the bed moves. The fine sand that goes in the joints is a different product; the polymeric sand page works it out.
An inch, and when it is measured
CMHA's construction guide screeds the bed to a nominal inch before the pavers go on; its pavement design guide says the bed should not exceed an inch once compacted, and that under three quarters of an inch it may not lock the pavers. Either way, the sand is not where a low spot is fixed. Screed it level over a base that is already level; a dip filled with sand settles into a dip in the patio.
Bags or delivered
Under about a cubic yard the page buys bags; at a yard or more it orders the sand delivered by the short ton (2,000 lb), at 1.4 short tons a yard. A 600 square foot patio takes 1.85 cubic yards, which is a delivery. The sand covers the paved area only: the base reaches past the edges, the sand does not.
