Paver Base Calculator

The stone under your pavers — how deep for what it carries and the ground under it, and how much to order.

An estimate of material — your quarry's weight a yard and your soil decide the order.

10% covers the pavers cut at the edges in a running bond, which is where this starts; herringbone and 45° patterns cut more. It is added once, to the pavers — the base, the sand and the joints are the size of the patio.

What to buy

Buying noteCall 811 a few business days before you dig. It is the free national before-you-dig service: the utilities mark their lines, and every dig needs it, however shallow.
Buying noteSpike the edging into the base, not the sand: CMHA wants at least 1 in of it bearing on the side of the pavers, and no edging set on the bedding sand.
Buying note15,928 lb is about 11 pickup loads at ~1,500 lb a load, and one pallet is more than a load: have it delivered. Your truck's payload goes under Assumptions.

How much base goes under pavers

The base under the 12 by 20 foot patio this page opens with is 4 inches of crushed stone after compaction, reaching 6 inches past each free edge: 262 square feet of footprint, 5.14 short tons (2,000 lb) of stone, ordered as 5.25, to the next quarter of a short ton. In place that is 3.23 cubic yards; loose, as a loader scoops it, 4.11 cubic yards; in 0.5 cubic foot bags, 223 of them — which is why it is delivered.

How thick, and why the figures differ

The thickness turns on two things: what the pavement carries, and what it sits on. CMHA's figures are the least for well-drained soil; Unilock, a paver maker, gives deeper bases where the ground is clay or recently filled:

GroundPatio or walkDriveway
Well-drained (CMHA)4 in6 in
Clay or silt (Unilock)8 in12 in
Recently filled (Unilock)8 in12 in

Unilock goes deeper even on good ground — 6 to 8 inches for a patio and 10 for a drive in established neighborhoods. CMHA's 4 and 6 are minimums, and every depth is a box under Assumptions. Compact it in lifts of 4 to 6 inches, each to 98% of standard Proctor density, so an 8 inch base is two lifts.

Compacted once, not twice

The depth is the depth after compaction. The page weighs that volume at the compacted density, 1.59 short tons a cubic yard, and orders it loose at that weight over the loose density, 1.25. A popular base calculator adds 20% "for compaction" on top of a figure that is already compacted, and orders a fifth too much stone. The two densities are MoDOT's for crushed stone, the same figures the gravel pages use.

Past the edge

The base reaches past every edge that has edging, so the edging is spiked into stone. CMHA's rule of thumb is at least the base's own thickness; ICPI's tolerance guide puts it at 6 inches for a base up to 6 inches deep, as deep as the base from 6 to 10, and 10 inches beyond that. Against the house there is no band: mark that side on the part's card.

On clay CMHA lays geotextile under the base, overlapped 12 inches; the page ticks that row on clay. We are not connected with any maker or supplier named here.
